Le Domaine de la Prade The Midi-Pyrénées, Department 09, Ariège

17th century stone manor house with two 3 bedroomed apartments and swimming pool, situated in the beautiful countryside of the Midi-Pyrénées.
Large Swimming Pool
Prices £550 per week - available from April to September

The property, called “Le Domaine de la Prade” is a 17th century stone manor house, locally known as a “bastide” that stands in a secluded wooded valley. A kilometre down the tree lined path is the fortified village of Camon, known locally for its profusion of roses that climb every available wall, and its 10th century abbey-chateau that sheltered King Charlemagne in medieval times.

In all directions fortified castles, abbeys and cathedrals once protected medieval France’s warring nobility. Two kilometres from La Prade, in the opposite direction to Camon, is the village of Lagarde, home of the ancient ruins of a castle that used to be known as the “petit Versailles”. Half an hours drive in the direction of the Pyrénées is the fortress of Montségur that was the last remaining bastion for the Cathars – a medieval group of Christians that was persecuted by the Pope. The small medieval town of Mirepoix with its 14th century cathedral and its ancient beautifully preserved town square lies 10 kilometres from La Prade and organises fairs, exhibitions, plays and processions during the summer months. 5 kilometres in another direction is Montbel lake, a huge man made reservoir surrounded by hills spreading gently towards the Pyrénées, clearly seen in the distance. The whole Ariège region is steeped in history within its landscape of pastel fields and hills calmly stretching away on all sides towards the dramatic splendour of the Pyrénéen mountain range. The countryside is ideal for hiking, hacking on horseback (there are several riding clubs nearby) and cycling.

The house itself is divided into the main family house and the entirely guest wing that has its own gardens and entrance. The accommodation consists of two spacious, light apartments with separate entrances. One apartment has three bedrooms, a large bathroom, a kitchen and dining room and a large sitting room (open plan). The second apartment also has three bedrooms two of which have bathrooms en suite, a kitchen dining area and a sitting room (also open plan). The whole building stands on a gently sloping hill so that one side of the house has balconies looking out onto the main courtyard, the wooded hills and the river l`Hers, flowing through the fields at the bottom of the field: the other side of the building opens straight onto the gardens and the drive where there are chairs, tables and barbecue area. The large swimming pool (16m x 12m) is in separate grounds, with seating and barbecue area, to the right of the house. Camon village (1 1/2 kms) has a bar and “épicerie” and Mirepoix town (10 kms) has more shops, a supermarket and a number of good restaurants. Bicycles are available for those who feel particularly energetic.
